Boston: Houghton Mifflin, undated 1880s in Victorian green cloth, with both the 1861 and the 1883 prefaces. Just the mildest scuffing, Near Fine hardcover. First serialized in "The Atlantic Monthly" beginning December 1859, this is quite a startling occult romance of an aberrant, feral woman who is evidently part snake. The story caused considerable sensation when serialized in "The Atlantic Monthly" in 1858 & was compared to Keats' "Lamia" and Hawthorne's "Marble Faun," but is today largely forgotten as a pioneer work of science fiction, even though the author is well remembered for "The Autocrat of the Breakfast Table" (1858) and as the father of the noted Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. Devotees of Victoriana may additionally know he invented the stereoscope, an entertainment device beloved by just about every family of the era, allowing photographs to be viewed as three-dimensional. He was as signal member of a literary circle that included Longfellow, Lowell, Howells, etc., which made him a character in a fictional account of this group, Matthew Pearl's "The Dante Club" (2003). He was one of the so-called "Fireside Poets" including Longfellow, Whittier, Lowell, and Bryant. Seller Inventory # 3834
