About this Item

SCARCE Indian Publication. Very lightly bumped lower corners. Very slightly rubbed corners and spinecaps, a couple tiny dings to upper spine. Two tiny pinholes, like a staple, near center of fore edge -- one starts at front board and goes nearly to the end, the other starts at front endpapers and only goes half way through the pages. A little bit of scuffing to rear board top edge. Light foxing to endpapers. Gilt lettering debossed to spine and front board, forest green cloth-covered boards. Measures 5 x 7.25 inches. Very clean, tight and bright. No markings to text. 123 pp. First printed in London in 1879, this is the first Indian edition. "England, India, and Afghanistan" consists of five chapters: First Steps in a Far-off Country; Conquest and Tyranny; India's Agony, Consolidation and Its Results; Afghanistan. It begins, "In the year 1600 was granted the first charter to an English Company trading with the East Indies. The venture was a purely commercial one; it was set on foot by English merchants, and was carried on without any kind of Government aid, and without any suggestion of territorial aggrandisement." Besant goes on to discuss the wrongs committed in India by the English, and the horrors carried out in Afghanistan. Then comes "The Story of Afghanistan" to follow up. "Will England be loyal to her love of truth and her hatred of oppression, or has she begun to tread the path of disregard of all duty, of contempt for all morality, the path that inevitably leads to national decay?".
