About this Item
Revised Edition. 1879 on both the copyright and title pages. The first edition was published in 1864. The second front end paper bears the signature of a Louise L. Dresel. She dated her signature June 1879. That conceivably could be the artist Louisa Loring Dresel. She would have been fifteen in 1879. However, you do have the differences in the spelling of the first name. The author, William Rimmer died in 1879. Both he and Ms. Dresel lived in this Massachusetts. 'From 1866 to 1870 he was the director of the Cooper Union School of Design for Women in New York City.Among his pupils there was Ella Ferris Pell. Rimmer's most famous work, though not normally associated with him, is Evening: Fall of Day, which was the basis for the Swan Song Records logo that the English rock group Led Zeppelin used. Another celebrated painting is his Flight and Pursuit in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.' His daughter Caroline Hunt Rimmer was also a sculptor and noted author of Figure Drawing for Children. You can see the brown covers in the photos. The gilt lettering on the front cover is nicely bright. The covers are quite clean. There is one small spot of smooth rubbing up a little ways from the front bottom edge. There is a little bit of a bump/crease just off the front bottom edge. There is some rubbing at the spine ends (see second photo). There is a thin, short white discoloration on the front top edge. There isn't much rubbing on the edges. The corners have a little bit, nothing serious. There is a light crease above the front bottom corner. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. I don't see any binding issues at all. The front and rear inside covers and end papers are brown. There are very clean. There is a straight, thin tear coming up from the bottom edge of the front end paper. It comes up about 2/3rds of the way up the page. At the top edge there is a very small thin tear. There is a moderate amount of foxing/amber spotting on the first few pages. After that there is a light amount. I didn't see any soiling. I didn't see any conspicuous creasing, no turned-down corners, no placeholder creases. There are no markings in the book. No attachments. The previous owner underlined lightly in pencil two sentences on the first page of the Introductory Note and four sentences on the second. As a result I turned over every page in the book. There is no other writing to be found on any of them. There are a great many illustrations throughout the book. They are all in very good condition. Seller Inventory # 004784
