A lovely late eighteenth century copy of this well known gardening poem by William Mason. A first thus, the first edition with a commentary and notes by W Burgh. This is also the first collected edition of this poem. William Mason was an English divine, poet and amateur draughtsman. He held esteemed friendships, with the likes of Thomas Gray and Horace Walpole. A New edition of this poem which compliments Capability Brown and his work. ESTC No. T96585. This edition has been completely revised by the author. This poem was originally issued in four separately published volumes over a ten-year period ending from 1772-1782. This is a first thus, being the first edition with Burgh's notes. William de Burgh was a prominent Anglo-Irish politician, theological author and abolitionist. Burgh campaigned tirelessly for the abolition of slavery. A lovely one-volume edition of this poem. In a full calf binding. Prior owner's monogram onlay to the front board. Externally, generally smart. Patches of light rubbing to the joints and extremities. Further patches of rubbing to the spine, heavier to the head and tail. Hinges are slightly strained but firm.
