About this Item
A later printing of the first complete edition, published in 1930 [the first printing of this complete edition was originally published in 1922). With a four-page preface by the author. ***Very good in green cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine and gilt titles and decoration to the front board. The gilt is still beautifully bright, having been protected by the dustwrapper. The boards are clean and unmarked. Top edge of text-block stained green by the publisher to match the binding cloth. Head and tail of spine slightly creased but with no tears to the fragile cloth. No bumps. Corners sharp. Very light sporadic foxing to the fore edge of the page block. Internally also very good, with no splitting to the endpapers despite the fragile binding. None of the usual offsetting to the endpapers. No foxing. Pages clean. Complete with the folding Forsyte Family Tree chart to the front of book, which remains near fine and uncreased. The book is printed on very thin paper but there is none of the usual creasing to the pages. Spine tight. ***In a very good green and black printed dustwrapper, priced at 7/6 net on the spine. The dustwrapper is largely complete, but there is a sizeable chip at the head of the spine, although this doesn't affect the titles. The edges of the dustwrapper are slightly rubbed and creased, with some very small loss to the tips of the foldovers. No tears. The spine of the dustwrapper is not discoloured at all, retaining the original fresh green colour. Dustwrapper clean. ***194 mm x 132 mm. 1104 pages. ***'"The Forsyte Saga" is the name given by Mr. Galsworthy to the sequence of three novels and two shorter tales, in which he has dealt with the fortunes of that typical upper middle-class family, the Forsytes. Published separately between 1906 and 1921, the various books of the Saga have materially contributed to the author's European reputation, and many critics have hailed the complete work as the most impressive achievement in modern English fiction. The Forsyte Saga consists of the following books: - "The Man of Property"; "Indian Summer of a Forsyte"; "In Chancery"; "Awakening"; "To Let" - all of which are reprinted complete and unabridged in this volume, with a new introduction by the author.' [Quote taken from the back panel of the dustwrapper] ***A later impression of the first edition of the complete and unabridged work of "The Forsyte Saga",' with a new preface by the author. The size of the book and fragile binding means that very few copies have survived in such nice collectable condition, especially in the fragile original 1930s dustwrapper. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.***.
