About this Item

Printed for private circulation by John Lane, The Bodley Head. 12mo. (21 cm.) vi, 107[1]p. Illustrated with 52 full-page black and white drawings of swords, each marked with the points related to fortune telling and with a page opposite each drawing which describes in detail what the various points on the sword may tell of one¿s fortune. Running title at top of each page. Red cloth with an elaborate sun with rays stamped in gilt on the front cover and with the title and a Samurai sword stamped in gilt on the spine. Top edge gilt, fore- and bottom edges deckle edge. Very minor wear to extremities, top right corner of front cover just barely bumped, spine very lightly faded, cloth clean, gilt bright, all illustrations in fine condition, else near fine to fine. No dust jacket. I have not been able to determine much about the author O. Hamaguchi, e.g., whether he was also the Prime Minister, Osachi Hamaguchi [1870-1931]. The translator John Talbot Clifton [1868-1928], who went by Talbot Clifton, was an English landowner who traveled widely through Alaska, Canada, Siberia, Burma, Malaysia, Africa, South America, and, obviously, Japan. ¿While wondering in Japan I happened to come across two or three books on Fortune-telling by Swords, which I believe are now out of print. The object of translating a book of this kind into English is to make more people interested in swords, Japanese or otherwise, that is at present the case; for a lover of swords and sword-handles is a matter of great interest to many in Japan¿. To understand that the ancient sword of Japan was not manufactured, but was made by the spirit; that the great sword-makers have been from the year 900 A.D. almost up to the present date honoured by the highest people in the land; that the spirit of the sword when held is supposed to impart itself to the holder; while on its clear surface can be seen Nature in almost all its beauties¿. A volume dealing far more deeply into the mystery of this interesting weapon I hope to have shortly ready.¿ [from the Preface. I have not been able to verify the publication of this promised future volume.] Talbot Clifton does not say what book he translated, alas. Apparently there flourished in Japan the art of kenso, i.e., reading the countenance of a Samurai sword. In any case, this is a rare piece of Japanese folklore, which is held by only a few university libraries in the U.S. Bookseller Inventory # 007917
