About this Item

(HARMONY SOCIETY). Feurige Kohlen der Aufsteigenden Liebesflammen im Lustspiel der Weisheit. Oeconomie, [PA], 1826. 1st ed. 316, [16]pp. Orig. sheep-backed paper-covered boards. Some foxing, else a very good copy. Very rare; American Imprints 24527 locates 3 copies, none in Pennsylvania. This was the first item printed at Economy on the Harmony Society Press. It was prepared for distribution among members of the Society only, and few if any copies were given to outsiders. George Rapp's exhortation to his followers begins, "Hearken, People of the Lord! Into your future condition you are not to look as by a vision but you are to do so by your act of faith. There are worlds and dwellings there; they still shine in youthful splendor; there thousands of years have passed; the change of time never robs them of their light; but here under your eyes everything disappears, decays, passes away, the splendor of the earth, earth's happiness, is a time of falling." The rest of the book is composed of prose hymns that cover the Society's various festivals and special occasions. A valuable work, providing insight into the mystical aspects of the Harmony Society and its prophetical leader. Bookseller Inventory # 52553
