About this Item

First edition, with "Issued April 16 , 1901" on title page and no additional printings or dates on copyright page. Dark green cloth with spine lettered in gilt. 625 pps. with index, plus publisher's catalogue at rear. Very good, couple chips to the front free endpaper. This copy belonged to noted California botanist Newton Pierce, whose full ownership signature in ink appears on the first blank and with his stylish vinatge bookplate featuring an observatory and star-strewn sky on the front free endpaper. A very few of his pencil notations appear within. Pierce, Special Agent to the Secretary of Agriculture, was considered California's first professional plant pathologist and made a special study of "California vine disease" which affected the wine-making industry.
