About this Item

Stated 'Washington Bicentennial Issue'. From Introduction: 'This booklet was prepared by the Fort Necessity Chapter, Pennsylvania Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, chiefly to direct attention to the neglected shrines in the Redstone Country, the first wilderness gateway to the golden west. It was on the nearby mountain slopes that Washington in contest, gave his first active military command, and gaged his strength and judgment with superior forces. Had the Revolutionary War failed, it was to this backwood haven he looked for refuge and shelter from a thirsty vengeance by royal decree. The region is rich in the highlights of frontier history, other than the stories of Braddock's winding trail, or Fort Necessity's heroic struggle. Here lived Crawford, the soldier and defender; Gallatin, the sage and mentor of Jefferson's time; here is Isaac Meason, a western frontiersman, blazed the trail in domestic arts, and started down the stream fleets of metal, the first contribution in making Pittsburgh the Birmingham of America.' Two Fort Necessity National Battlefield Site 6-page brochures (1955) are included. In addition, a 14-page booklet titled "A Young Colonel From Virginia" is included. In the booklet "A Young Colonel From Virginia", it states on page 9: 'The Historical Significance of the Battle' - 1) The first active, effective and practical cooperation of the colonies with one another, 2) The beginning of the French and Indian War, which determined that the Western Territory should be permanently Anglo-Saxon, 3) The real beginning of the Seven Years' War in Europe, which changed the map of the world, 4) The beginning of a war in which Great Britain's burden of expenses was so heavy that the excessive taxes placed upon the colonies brought on the American War for Independence, 5) The first real battle of Washington's military career which gave him a place in the eyes of the world.' Rubbed blue, brown/black and gilt hard cloth cover. End papers age yellowing on edges. Text pages lightly age yellowing along edges. Appears lightly, if ever used. Published by the Imperial Ruling and Binding Company, Pittsburg, PA. No ISBN on this old book. Steve's Bookshelves LLC Inventory #23-002560-4291. Bookseller Inventory # 002560
