About this Item
(BIRD AND BULL PRESS). SCHMOLLER, Hans. Mr. Gladstone's Washi, A Survey of Reports on the Manufacture of Paper in Japan, the Parkes Report of 1871. 8vo. Quarter morocco with sides based on a fine decorated paper in the Parkes Collection. Three fold-out illustrations and a separate suite of color prints in a portfolio, all enclosed in a slipcase. Newtown: Bird and Bull Press, 1984. Limited to 450 copies. A fine copy. Sir Harry Parkes was sent to Japan by W.E. Gladstone, the English prime minister, to gather information on Japanese papermaking. His report, along with a large selection of handmade paper, was sent to England in 1871 but disappeared soon thereafter. Hans Schmoller was told about this important cache of historical information in the 1970's and has put together a fascinating history of Parkes and the German scientist Kaempfer, who visited Japan in the late 17th century and who was the first to describe Japanese papermaking. Acompnaying the history are reprints of both the Parkes report and Kaempfer's description of Japanese papermaking. Also reproduced are 20 full-size reproductions of Japanese watercolors depicting papermaking. Each copy of this book also has an extra suite of these plates in a separate portfolio.
