About this Item

(title continues) A periodical work; consisting of a practical essay on Christian education, founded immediately on the scriptures, and the sacred offices of the Church of England: memoirs of modern philosophers, and extracts from their writings; extracts from sermons and other books relating to religious education; and a copious examination of modern systems of education, children's books, and books for young persons; conducted by Mrs Trimmer. J Hatchard (also F C and J Rivington on vols 3-5 ), 1802-1806, 5 vols [all published]. Together with: IMMEL, Andrea, An Index to the Guardian. UCLA 1990, card covers. A small stipple-engraved portrait of Mrs Trimmer in bonnet and shawl by Chapman is also loosely inserted. Published monthly for the first two years and then quarterly (with the month of publication varying slightly) for the final three years, a total of 28 issues. Contemporary full polished calf, black labels gilt, all volumes neatly recased with the old spines relaid. On vol 3 the new calf extends an inch onto the back cover. Title spotted in vol 2. A very nice set. A hugely important work in the field of children's literature. Some of the books Mrs Trimmer reviewed have not survived. Sets are very scarce. The last set at auction was as long ago as 1992 and sold for £2000 plus premium. Even the Oppenheimer collection (Sotheby's 1974-1977, the finest collection of children's books ever sold at auction) had only an odd volume. Bookseller Inventory # 000072
