Book Description Printed by Alexander & Phillips, Carlisle [Pennsylvania], 1806. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good-. iv, [1], 6-210 & [6] pages; Contemporary sheepskin leather, flat spine with red label lettered in gilt. A worn, but complete copy. The binding is rubbed with wear along the joints, edges and corners, but sound and intact. The paper is toned brown throughout, with a liberal assortment of minor stains. There is the stub of what was once a blank leaf at the rear, but the text is complete, including the interesting six-page list of subscribers. This book, along with William Giles' 'Guide to Domestic Happiness,' was popular in the early United States. It was first published in an American edition two years before [Philadelphia: At the Lorenzo Press, printed for Bronson & Chauncey., 1804]. There was another the following year -- [New-Haven: : From Sidney's Press, for Increase Cooke & Co., 1805]. Our edition was the third American edition, and another was called for in 1807: [again in New-Haven: From Sydney's Press, for Increase Cook & Co., 1807]. The present edition is the only one of these four to have been issued with a subscriber's list, in the manner of even earlier American bookselling. Its six pages make interesting reading, with the subscribers separately listed by location [most in Cumberland County, with smaller groups in Adams, Franklin, Dauphin and Mifflin counties, followed by four names each from Luzerne and Centre counties. There is an interruption to the alphabetic order of the names to include a group from Carlisle's Dickinson College, which included two Professors, 21 students, and the "B. L. Society" -- (Belles lettres society). See Shaw & Shoemaker 11265. OCLC: 425969566. Seller Inventory # 39573
