Norman Walker et al. . *** From December 16, 1884 until June 1, 1885, the spectacular World's Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition covered these grounds with gigantic wooden structures and broad, lighted paths. . D.H. Holmes, a New Orleans large dry good store acquired 500 copies and promptly stripped off the cloth covers, replacing them with his own gray stiff paper covers with adverts on the front & back covers. Some of these covers had an additional illustration of the St. Louis Cathedral pasted on the front covers. These were hawked at the exposition. See Perkins p.8. . *** REGARDING THE LARGE FOLDING MAP OF NEW ORLEANS: . The Map of New Orleans is often not present. . We disagree with bibliographer Howes [C -574] where he states: "Map not issued in all copies." . Perkins was correct, on p.9 he stated: "Map of New Orleans inserted." . Surely the book was issued with a map loosely laid inside the front cover. Obviously not being attached, the map was used separately from the book, commonly not reinserted or it simply slipped out, being lost forever. . During our tenure of nearly 55 years, we have had a substantial number of copies of the book come with the original map. When not present we provide a photo copy in full size from the original. . MAP DETAILS: This map was sold separately. . Per the map's upper left corner, where it stated: . "MAP OF THE CITY OF NEW ORLEANS. "STAUB, News Dealer, at Goldthwaite's Bookstore, Canal & Exchange Place, New ORLEANS." . At the lower right corner is the printer's imprint: . "M.G. DUNN & BRO. STEAM LITHO'S. N.O."[N.O. = New Orleans]. . *** THE PLATES: The work was illustrated with a frontispiece and 13 original engravings inserted [14 in all], not included in the pagination, most were done by Joseph Pennell. Each is printed on a stiff paper. . *** THE CONTENTS: The book contains exhaustive accounts of the traditions, historical legends, and remarkable localities of the Creole city. . Per Perkins, copies of this book were hawked by peddlers at the Exposition grounds. The period rumor was that Hearn had a romantic affair with a Creole woman named Mattie Foley. It is possible that her influence gave Hearn enough interest to write and edit this work. Hearn was also a resident of New Orleans for many years. Liberally extracted from See Perkins p.9, see below. . *** BINDING VARIANTS: . This guide was done as a part of the celebrations for the Centennial Exposition for New Orleans. Per P. Perkins, this title was printed in a LIMITED EDITION OF 1000 COPIES in all, 1000 copies issued by the publisher Coleman, then later half [500 copies] were bought by D.H. Holmes in New Orleans, for distribution at the Exposition. . The Holmes group of 500 copies were sold by peddlers at the exposition. The Holmes copies were stripped of their red cloth or red cardboard covers and rebound in gray stiff paper wrappers bearing the advertisement of D.H. Holmes on the front and back. Traces of the original reddish-brown wrappers can be found under the gray stiff covers on the spine. Some of the 500 were issued by. Seller Inventory # 84221711
