About this Item
A very attractive copy of Edward Gibbon's seminal history of the Roman Empire, illustrated with folding maps. Complete in eight volumes.'The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" has become one of the pillars of non-fiction writing since the first volume was published in 1776. Edward Gibbon embarked upon his greatest literary achievement seven years before it was first published, and he stated that he was often frustrated and tempted to throw it away whilst working on it. Gibbon offers a condensed, detailed, and thorough history of the fall of the Roman Empire, covering a period from 98 to 1590. On the journey he also looks at the history of Europe, Christianity, and the Church. Gibbon has been criticised for his flawed interpretations of various Religions, with his scathing view on Christianity leading the book to be banned in several countries upon its publication'.Including a life of Gibbon.Volume I illustrated with a frontispiece, and one folding map.Volume II illustrated with a folding map.Volume V illustrated with a folding map.Collated, all plates are present. In a full diced calf binding. Externally, smart. Spines are a little faded. Light rubbing to the leather. Minor bumping to the extremities. Only a few light marks to the boards and spine. Rubbing and marks are a little heavier to the boards of Volume VIII. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with the occasional scattered spot, including to the maps. Small closed tears to the folding maps. Very Good Indeed. Seller Inventory # 922P13D
