First edition. Thick octavo. Frontispiece portrait of the author, x, 758 pp. plus numerous full page illustrations. Publisher's terra-cotta cloth with gilt spine lettering, front with a large gilt design, brown endpapers. An excellent copy.The National Peace Jubilee was organized by bandleader and composer Patrick S. Gilmore. The event was intended to celebrate the end of the American Civil War and to promote national unity and peace. It was an amazing gathering and featured an orchestra of over 1,000 musicians and a chorus of 10,000 singers and held in a specially constructed Coliseum in Boston, which could accommodate around 30,000 spectators. The Jubilee attracted famous musicians and conductors from across the United States and Europe. Among the participants was Johann Strauss Sr., a renowned composer and conductor. It was hugely successful and led Gilmore to organize the World Jubilee in 1872. Both of these major cultural events in American history see to have been, by and large forgotten. The last copy to appear at auction was in 1937. Seller Inventory # 76158
