About this Item

Louis L'Amour long denied authorship of these Doubleday Hopalongs, written early in his career under the "Tex Burns" pseudonym. L'Amour wanted to base the character on the hard-drinking ne'er-do-well originated by the late Clarence Mulford; Doubleday reportedly edited heavily to fit the more clean-cut film and TV image of the character as portrayed by William Boyd. This is an ex-library book with substantial rub to bottom board edges and top edge of spine, but with minimal library depredations. Manilla pocket glued to FFE indicates book borrowed eight times 1964-1968; this card holder also stamped "WITHDRAWN." Small rubber stamp to bottom of title page reads "San Bernardino Free Public Library." Small sticker attached near bottom of DJ spine displays silhouette of man on rearing horse -- probably a generic "shelve with Westerns" library indicator. There is some residue to both front & rear pastedown where a gently glued-down dust jacket holder was removed, but NO matching abrasions to DJ flaps, indicating this DJ was fully shielded by some earlier protector. This ORIGINAL 1951 dust jacket is now in a removable Brodart. This original DJ shows modest (1/8th to 1/4-inch) chips to corners, and some straightened triangular folds to bottom 1/4-inch of front panel, but remains impressively bright, good-plus to very-good-minus. Not price clipped; original $2.50 price showing. A pretty book with NO exterior page-edge stampings, though the main value here lies in the original dust jacket. Reduced from $350.
