About this Item
[light shelfwear, but generally a good sound copy, one-time owner's signature on ffep; jacket has suffered a little paper loss to top of spine, tiny nicks at bottom corners]. Novel about a stockbroker who's essentially a good guy, but is weighed down by the responsibilities of supporting his rather expensive family (including his somewhat cold and socially-ambitious wife and her recently-divorced sister), and is taken advantage of by (among others) his oldest son's Italian tutor, who becomes the passionate lover of said sister-in-law. According to the New York Times reviewer, this "recognizable American type [the stockbroker] has found a champion in Mrs. Herbert," who views him as essentially "a warm-hearted fellow, really a boy grown older," despite his "limitations in cultural interests and his prejudices against foreigners, artists and those whose ideas differ from his." Sounds to me like he's a bit of a pill. Seller Inventory # 22377
