Signed first edition hardcover with dust jacket; blue cloth boards with gilt lettering on the spine and an embossed whale's tail on the front cover. The spine ends are bumped and rubbed and the spine is mildly slanted. The ffep contain a map in blue of Baja California and the 208 pages are clean and unmarked. There are 88 photographs along with a list briefly describing them at the beginning of the book. There are three light stains across from the half-title page with the author's message on the half-title page as follows, " To my good friend Leo Roripaugh with all the heart (?) in the world Yours Erle, 1960. Erle Stanley Gardner (1889 -1970) was an American lawyer and author. Though best known for the Perry Mason series of detective stories, he also wrote a series of non-fiction books, mostly narrations of his travels through Baja California and other regions in Mexico, including this book. The "Leo" to whom Gardner refers to in the inscription, is the brother of Louie Roripaugh, a close friend and frequent Gardner travel companion. The unclipped mylar-protected cover is discolored with age and has been held together at the spine with scotch tape. There is a 2 & 1/2" open tear at the top of the spine with a 3/4" open tear at the spine bottom . There are also three smaller open tears along the spine edges, along with a 1"x 1/2" on the front cover. The flap creases are rubbed and chipped as well. In this book, the author takes us along on his adventure whale hunting ( with cameras only) to a rare and beautiful part of our continent to observe the life of whales in their habitat. A nice copy of a book full of splendid narrative, fun, excitement and awe for these amazing creatures. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Author Inscription,Signature and Date. Trade.
