About this Item

A fine early printing handsomely bound and presented. 8vo, beautifully presented in a deluxe binding of full pebbled red morocco, the upper cover lettered in gilt and with small gilt tool within a triple-blind-ruled framework with floral corner-pieces, the spine with raised bands triple-ruled in blind and gilt lettered in one compartment, blind tooled turn-ins and a.e.g. viii, 261 pp. A very fine and very pleasing copy, the binding very handsome and especially well preserved, the text-block in excellent order. A VERY ATTRACTIVE EARLY EDITION OF THE FIRST FOUR POEMS OF HIS FAMOUS IDYLLS OF THE KING CYCLE, which would eventually comprise twelve narrative poems and which was not finished until 1885. As in the first edition, this collection contains, 'Enid', 'Vivien', 'Elaine' and 'Guinevere'. Tennyson remains one of the most popular British poets. The 'Idylls' were based on the Arthurian legends, and retell the story of King Arthur, his knights, his love for Guinevere and her tragic betrayal of him in blank verse. The dramatic narratives are not an epic either in structure or tone, but derive elegiac sadness in the style of the idylls of Theocritus. 'Idylls of the King' is often read as an allegory of the societal conflicts in Britain during the mid-Victorian era. Bookseller Inventory # 26761
