This finely detailed map "India Orientalis" measures 10 3/4" x 14 1/4" and is in excellent condition with evidence of verso page text from being bound and red dye line on the left edge. Depicting Southeast Asia, this map highlights numerous regions throughout Asia during the 17th century, including Indostan, the archaism term for South Asia, and the Indonesian islands of Sumatra, Borneo and part of New Guinea. Japan and China are illustrated to the north of the Philippine Islands that dot the Oriental Ocean. This map also illustrates the western coast of North America and the fabled Quivira, a region first noted in 1541 by the Spanish conquistador Francisco Vazquez de Coronado. Quad's India Orientalis is a replication of Ortelius' from the atlas Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. Matthaus Quad (1557-1613) was a was a German cartographer and engraver living in Cologne who worked in partnership with Johannes Bussemacher, a printer, to publish "Fasciculus Geographicus", a world atlas.
