An illustrated first edition on the island of Foula as written by a long-term inhabitant, owner and Laird, in a very scarce dust wrapper. Foula is one of the UK's most remote permanently inhabited islands, situated in the Shetland archipelago of Scotland. It has a microscopic population of around thirty-eight people, with most inhabitants being farmers. It has been owned and inhabited by the Holbourn family since the early twentieth century. Ian B. Stoughton Holbourn (1872-1935) was Laird of Foula for thirty-five years, as well as being a writer and Professor of the University of Oxford. Comprises a series of articles on the subject of Foula, alongside a memoir of the author written by his wife, M. C. Stoughton Holbourn.Illustrated with full plate photographs throughout.In a very scarce and unclipped dust wrapper, bound in the publisher's original binding. In a full cloth binding with an unclipped dust wrapper. Externally very smart, minor bumping to the tail of the spine. Dust wrapper has tape repairs along the head and tail but is in excellent condition with minor wear only. Gift inscription to the front pastedown. Internally firmly bound, pages bright and clean.
