About this Item
Fielding, The History of the adventures of Joseph Andrews, and his friend Mr. Abraham Adams , complete in one volume, published in the famous Strahan edition of Fielding s works, 1783, London: W. Strahan, First Edition thus. Volumes VI of the Works , In contemporary full, very worn mottled calf leather binding, in-12 (11 cm x 17,5 cm), holding firm. Interior in very good condition, very little spotting. Frontispice copper-engraved after Michael 'Angelo' Rooker. Former owner s (rather discrete) signature. This volume also contains Fielding s Preface to David Simple . Two leaves are missing between p 68 and p 73, either omitted by the binder by mistake or cut away by a puritanical reader, afraid of his children coming across a delicate passage, when all is said by allusion and nothing is stated explicitly, but a later owner has repaired the omission by inserting the missing text, apparently drawn from the same edition. Full mottled calf leather binding, very worn close to the edges as if it had been dried or rubbed down close to the boards, gilt titles and ornaments largely worn away. While holding, front hinge gives signs of incipient splitting, and so does the spine (see photograph), without yet affecting the solidity of the binding. All pages holding. If handled reasonably gently, may hold for another two centuries… The pages are nicely cream-coloured and fresh. Despite its defects, this is a very attractive copy when opened, offered at a low price. Michael Rooker was a well-known English oil and watercolour painter of architecture and landscapes, illustrator and engraver. A period piece, virtually contemporary with the publication of this classic, still highly readable, delightfully politically incorrect (in terms of the 21st century), and a savage attack on the rotten borough system of the 18th century. Of great interest and at an attractive price. Numerous photographs available upon request. Total weight 0,450 kgs. Seller Inventory # ABE-1723648222424
