First edition, Prinred grey warppers. 64 pp. An essay published by noted 19th century American historian George Bancroft to refute many of the claims made in Reed's grandson's 2-volume biography sepearte pamphlet published 20 years earlier. Reed's conduct during the Revolutionary War has been questioned, particularly his treatment of Washington, as well as his role in Pennsylvania history of the period. Bancroft charges: ".I find his character tainted by duplicity.as a vacillating trimmer who.near the end of 1776 meditated defection. Good, chipping about the egdes of the sligtly oversizxed wrappers, chipping to the spine ends, contemporary Philadelphia bookseller stamp bottom of front wrapper and a small previous ownership label top corner front wrap.
