Book Description Z P Hatch, 1856. Hardcover. Contemporary half black calf leather and simulated blue morocco, gilt lettering. Although title page states it is in two part, s there are five separate sections with the contents pages misplaced. Part 1 1855 has 208 & 200 pp; Part 2 has 206, 200 and 38 pp. In addition one gathering in the first section of Part 1 (pp 41-76) was omitted. Very good. Corners bumped with a bit of the cardboard exposed. Leather is scuffed on the highpoints but nothing too serious. Internally, there is an area of inactive silverfish damage c. 1/4 x 2 inches long on the paste-down front endpaper and first 2 leaves, some sporadic foxing, tanning on and adjacent to several plates, sepia illustrated title page faded, a few dogears but otherwise the book is tight clean and even crisp, probably never really read. Well illustrated with full page steel engravings (plates) which include views of Weehawken from the Hudson River, the Catskills, Lake George, Custom House at Philadelphia, various sites in Europe, scenes of domestic life, children, and a somewhat anti-Catholic 'Benedictine Monks at Their Private Festivities'. Poetry, short stories, anecdotes, etc. , including "Report of the New York City Maternal Association", "Female Influence" by Sarah C Grimes, "Truth" by S C Goodrich, "A Hindoo Female", "Letter to Longfellow", Greece, etc. Bound magazine; popular culture; Victorian; history; religion; edification; poetry; Christian.
