Book Description New York Public Library, NY, 1964. Hardcover. First edition thus, not stated. 174 pgs., large 8vo. format. Edited by Pierre Coustillas. An ex-library copy with stamps, small spine label, sliced-out rear fly, but a nice library bookplate on pastedown. The defects, though many, are not really serious. A lightly used book, in red cloth, no jacket, solid binding with title gilt showing brightly still. Gissing was habitually a struggling writer and a complicated personality, whose misalliances with women were persistent and fatal flaws. But it is in his letters to them that he shows himself most truly. The only one he did not marry, Gabrielle, is here described as in fact the only real wife to him, and the one who at last brought dignity to his life. Very good condition (no dust jacket).
