About this Item
Kobe 1930, Thompson. Full blue leather, 244p., very good, spine faded, else clean, solid, many b. w. illustrations, 13 x 19.5 cm. R A R E FIRST LIMITED EDITION 500 COPIES This is a fascinating and unusual monograph. The fox is the patron saint of Inari shrines in Japan. The fox being the messenger of Princess Ugatama, the goddess of rice. There- fore every rice-farming village in Japan has this shrine along with images of the fox. This tradition came from China around 711, when the Hata family bulilt the frist shrine at Fushimi, near Kyoto to honor the spirit of Princess Ugatama, also known as the "Barn Spirit." * Foxes have also been known to impersonate women in Japan. There is a famous story: TAMAMONOMAE, the fox-woman, which was made into Noh and Kabuki plays. It is also commonly believed that foxes also impersonate humans, and that foxes took the form of cats, to enter Japanese houses. * This lovely and charming work contains bewitching stories of the fox & all its manifestations. With the following tales: THE BRIDGE OF LOVE; NEW WINE IN OLD BOTTLES; FOX IN THE MIDST, YURIKO'S MARRIAGE; RAINY SEASON; MUSHIRO. The fox was supposed to be a reincarnation ghost of a dead soul. These ghostly stories address this basic fear of most Japanese. It is about their superstitious ideas of foxes. Unusual folk tales. * Issued in two editions, the contents of both were identical. The First Edition was limited to 500 copies. Both editions are now scarce. * REFERENCES: Atsuharu Sakai: WE JAPANESE BEING DESCRIPTIONS OF MANY CUSTOMS, MANNERS, CEREMONIES, FESTIVALS ARTS AND CRAFTS OF THE JAPANESE BESIDES NUMEROUS OTHER SUBECTS, pp.299,333. * E. Papinot: HISTORICAL AND GEOGRAPHICAL DICTIONARY OF JAPAN: p.206, where he states that "Uga-no-mitama is perhaps the same as Toyo-uke-hime. Her numerous temples are guarded by two stone foxes, hence the common belif that the fox is the God of rice." * Mock Joya: THINGS JAPANESE.
