About this Item

Cactus, Arizona was established on May 14, 1918 at a two story house just south of the Arizona Canal on the West side of 19th Avenue in an area known familiarly as "Hyatt's Camp" named for the 40-50 tent houses established by William C. Hyatt for World War I veterans recovering from various lung diseases. Since Mrs. Hyatt had been a nurse for the government in World War I, she was able to organize for treatment though as this five page letter describes these tent houses often had scorpions and other insects. Even then when people called the area "Sunny Slope" (or Sunnyslope) it was a pejorative name though one popularly applied to the area. The letter is to the patients Aunt Sallie and begins describing his lung tests which required his travel into Phoenix (about 7 miles) describes in detail a careful regimen of rest and avoiding even travel by automobile. The letter is important both for showing Arizona as a health resort for those with lung problems and how remote even Sunnyslope was from central Phoenix. This undoubtedly is why stage coaches had to complement railoards where the trolley did not come. Includes the original mailing envelope with Cactus Ariz postmark to Mrs. S.M. Eads, Roanoke Virginia.
