Formed by the first and second earls of Macclesfield in the early eighteenth century, their library at Shirburn Castle, Oxfordshire, was one of the greatest to appear at auction in the last 100 years or so. Its breadth and scope are truly impressive, and the collection had remained virtually untouched, in situ, since about 1750. Robert S Pirie s set, with a few ink annotations in the margins. Robert S Pirie Reference Library on the front pastedowns. An overall fine set (a couple of light corner bumps and some spines on the heavier volumes leaning a bit). Seller Inventory # 1673
