About this Item

[xlx] and 626 p. This is No. 50 in the Lakeside Classic series, which began in 1903. R.R. Donnelley published a reprint of a classic historical work each year, in a fine edition. The books were given as gifts to Donnelley employees and have never been available for sale except in the secondary market. In good condition, they are highly prized and a set of several them is a beautiful addition to a library. Each book contains a Publisher's Preface that gives background on the selection and publication of the book and on the status of the company, established in 1864 and now the world's largest commercial publisher. The noted historian Milo Quaife wrote historical introductions, footnotes, indexes, etc., for many of the classics. General Custer is a major figure in American history, known best for his death at Little Big Horn in 1876 in an Indian skirmish. However, he had a long military career before that, starting with his admission to West Point in 1857, "fighting fearlessly and joyously," according to Quaife. This is Custer's narrative of his life, which was published in installments between 1872 and 1874 in the Galaxy. Dark red hard cover, gilt titles, top edges gilt, map, fine frontispiece of Custer, and eleven other illustrations, with tissue covers protecting them; notes; index, all fine. Original cellophane dust cover has some small chips; publisher's gift card laid in. Bookseller Inventory # LC50GC
