Wrappers chipped, else very good. $ Presentation inscription from the author on front wrapper, "Dr. W. Hand Browne, with the compliments of Charles C. Jones, Jr., Augusta, Georgia." William Hand Browne (1828-1912), Librarian of Johns Hopkins University and Professor of English Literature, served as editor of the Southern Historical Magazine. Samuel Elbert (1740-1788) was a colonel in the Continental Army (brevetted brigadier general in 1783) and the governor of Georgia (1785-1786). He led an expedition to Amelia Island, Florida in 1777 and fought in Howe's expedition to Florida the following year. At Frederica, he led a small naval force which captured three British vessels on April 19, 1778. Elbert distinguished himself at the battle of Briar Creek (March 3, 1779), but was captured after offering fierce resistance in the face of superior numbers. He was exchanged in June, 1781, in time to participate in the siege of Yorktown. De Renne II, 859. Bookseller Inventory # 69722
