Ownership signature and inkstamped crest on front pastedown. A tight, quite attractive first edition of this useful reference -- with a choice autograph addition: Tipped to an inner flyleaf is a Typed Note Signed from Mearns, 1p, 8" X 10½", Washington, DC, 30 October 1951. Addressed to noted Lincoln scholar ARNOLD F. GATES (1914-93). Near fine. On "Library of Congress" letterhead, Mearns notes "I'm delighted to know that you have written an article on that useful periodical 'Lincoln Lore,' and hope you will send me a copy of it when it appears" and compares various Lincoln-related publications such as "Abraham Lincoln Quarterly" and "The Lincoln Herald." Signed boldly in full. Mearns (1899-1981) was the Library of Congress's long-time manuscript division chief and a respected Lincoln scholar. Bookseller Inventory # 41400
