The Darling River is the third longest river in Australia, 1,472 Kilometers from source to Wentworth where it joins with the Murray River. In the late part of the 19th century the Darling became a major transportation route using shallow-draft paddle steamers from busy river ports of Bourke and Wilcannia to the South Australian railheads at Morgan and Murray Bridge Today there are 29 weirs and locks along the upper and lower parts of the river.
