Tipped in letter: "Pawtucket July 17,1889./ Gentlemen./ I have your/ kind invitation for/ Friday the19th inst, and/ would say in reply that/ I hope to have the pleasure/ of meeting you at the/ "Headquarters Mess" at the/ time named in your card./ I am yours truly/ A. H. Littlefield/ To Genl. Rhodes & Staff/ at Camp H. W. Ladd. After the funeral oration there follow Resolutions by organizations in which the deceased had been very active: First National Bank of Pawtucket, Pawtucket Hair Cloth Company, Pawtucket Gas Company, Royal Weaving Company, American Hair Cloth Company, Rhode Island Mortgage and Trust Co. Town Council, Town of Lincoln. Pawtucket Business Men's Association, Rhode Island Historical Society, Soldiers' and Sailors' Historical Society of Rhode Island, Ballou Post No. 3, G. A. R., and newspaper notices.The enclosed handwritten note was written to Brig. General Elisha H. Rhodes, who had enlisted as Private in the 2nd R. I. Volunteers in 1861 and was mustered out as Colonel in command of the Regiment in 1865. He was later in command of the Rhode Island State Militia. His writings during the Civil War are published in ALL FOR THE UNION; THE CIVIL WAR DIARY AND LETTERS OE ELISHA HUNT RHODES which was quoted from extensively in Ken Burns' documentary PBS film THE CIVIL WAR.
