Description:

Crockett, Vivian. MESSALINA: The Wickedest Woman In Rome. New York: Berkley Books # D2012 2nd Printing (reprints # G-14 but first printing with superior cover art), 1959. INSCRIBED by cover artist Robert Maguire "Regards, R. A. Maguire" on the title page. Maguire (1921-2005) was one of the greatest paperback illustrators of the 1950s and 1960s, famous for his "Maguire Women." Paperbacks are rarely signed by their authors much less their illustrators. Messalina and Rome shared this in common according to the blurb on the back cover "her beauty, her infamy, her glory and her shame" and Maguire has done a delightful interpretation. Very Good Plus copy, nice and square, corner crease to front cover not affecting the cover art, light abrasion and soil to the spine but far better than average and SIGNED to boot.
