4to, (310x245mm), 102p. numerous illustrations in colour & monochrome. Original colour-printed illustrated boards and endleaves by Edward Bawden (and see below), corner tips worn. Contents include Laurence Scarfe Noto and the villas of Bagheria, Alfred Fairbank Bartholomew Dodington, Helmut Gernsheim The photographs of Ida Kar, and most notably Edward Bawden Unpublished drawings of Portugal (Howes Edward Bawden 183; McKay 'Bibliography' in Bliss Edward Bawden p193). Bawden's contribution (apart from the covers and endleaves) consists of several line engravings and 6 colour plates (4 double-page printed verso and recto) which the artist made especially for Motif. The stunning originals were pasted up from linocuts printed in colour, from these, and separations made by the artist, line blocks were made, and printed with specially manufactured inks. We are located some 20 minutes drive from the M6, Junction 38 and therefore only a 20 mile detour from the main England-Scotland route. Appleby is a town well worth a visit, the coffee pot is always on though refreshment with ¿a little more authority' can be had if the Crown & Cushion in the town's market square is open!
