About this Item
apparently contemporary full calf binding, front board and endpaper detached, spine in five panels gilt-decorated in French style, corners bumped, wear to leather panels, illustrated by frontispiece and four portraits of French Royals, all much foxed around edges, small piece (previous owner's name, presumably), clipped from top edge of title page, text block otherwise sound and clean in this large-paper production with generous margins. The author (1738 - 1813) was at one time considered the French Virgil, and was much praised by Voltaire, but his poetic reputation fell considerably in later times. He composed this work during the reign of Robespierre, and completed it while abroad in exile. It was published in France after his return in 1802 as 'La Piti', but according to the notes in this edition, had been severely tampered with by the censors of the Consulate. De Lille sold the manuscript to the present editors, who published this first complete edition in London, with plentiful notes, without consulting the author. Pages: xxviii, 199, The poem finishes on page 121, the rest is the notes and commentary. Seller Inventory # 19971
