About this Item
Hardcover. 1607 reprint of the originally published work, circa 1535. Bound in brown leather with raised bands, gilt tooling and stamped lettering on the spine. Tooled edges on boards. All edges stained red. Written in Latin. Headcap is missing with headband detaching, yet present. Outer hinges are cracked, particularly at either end with stitching starting to be exposed, but patinated leather boards are still firmly attached. Covers show wear, scratching, and light chipping. Corners have been slightly bumped and worn. Marbled pastedowns and endpapers are in red, blue, gold, white and green color themes. Title page bears black and white scene of birds guarding a landscape with houses or a town and ships on the water, surrounded by the Latin words, "Pietas, Homini, Tutissima and Virtus". The title, loosely and roughly translated into English is, "The Works of Marcus Jerome, Widow of Cremona, White Bishop." It is "Ex Officina Martini Nutii, ad insigne duarum Ciconiarum", or loosely translated, "From the work of Martin Nutius" per Google Translator. Printed on laid paper, pages have unevenly toned with minimal foxing throughout, yet are complete. Some minor creasing is present at the head of pages, beginning with the flyleaf through about page 100, (give or take), becoming less and less creased as the pages progress. Fascinating marginalia, likely period, is intermixed throughout, (particularly within the 300's pages), and is accompanied by underlining in ink. Some notations, also in ink, are made within the front and back flyleaves. 592 pp. At At 3" x 4.25" x 1.25", this book fits delightfully and comfortably in the palm of your hand. The text is quite legible (if you read Latin!). Pages have held up through the centuries quite nicely. As this little book is well over 400 years old, it is in tremendous, "very good" condition, in its original, lovely binding. Additional photos are available upon request. Full refund if not satisfied. Seller Inventory # 065782
