About this Item

First published in 1808, this popular biography of Catalina Schuyler and accompanying account of life in colonial New York state appears here in a one-volume version of the two-volume London edition. The Scottish-born Grant (1755?1838) lived in Albany, NY, from the time she was three until she was thirteen years old, during which period she became a prot?g?e of the wealthy, prominent Schuyler family. For the rest of her life, Grant idealized pre-Revolutionary America as an idyllic, unspoiled society; when it came time to write the present biography of her mentor, Grant interspersed her recollections of Madame Schuyler with her recollections of adventures in the primitive wildernesses of Albany and Oswego (and the less-primitive New York City), incorporating vivid descriptions of local social customs, education, religion, interactions with Native Americans, and treatment of slaves. 12mo (19.5 cm, 7.7"). 295, [13 (adv.)] pp. Sabin 28296; Howes G-303. Publisher's charcoal grey cloth, covers framed in blind, spine with gilt-stamped title; binding cocked and rubbed, front cover with upper portion waterstained, head of spine chipped above affixed band of cloth tape. Ex?social club library: 19th-century bookplate on front pastedown, call number inked on front free endpaper and partially overlaid with a neatly inked paper slip, rubber-stamp on title-page. No other markings. Waterstaining to upper inner portions of first few leaves; scattered stains and spots elsewhere. Bookseller Inventory # 26305
