Both volumes have a DIRE appearance most of both spines and 20% of covering to Vol I front board & 40% of covering to Vol II rear board have been chewed off by very small mammal, probably a field mouse or vole (house mouse would have caused more damage), two other edge sections chewed to Vol I, front hinge chewed & board OFF to Vol II, inner hinges cracked causing wobble to Vol I. End-papers a little browned, text is a little bowed. Very attractive tissue covered plates on very white clean paper of good quality. Page-edges a little age-darkened. Volume 2, printed in 1844 is the first volume of Tom Burke. Size octavo, 396 and 372 pages. Half green morocco over marbled boards five raised bands to the spine with gilt frames and titles in the compartments, gilt edging to the morocco on the covers, marbled paste-downs and end-papers. Condition very good, corners and edges rubbed, frontispiece spotted, offsetting from frontis onto title page, pages slightly toned, slight offsetting from the other plates, a couple of spots in the margin of a couple of the plates else contents generally clean. Leather. Condition: Very Good. Phiz (illustrator). First edition. The first edition of this work by Charles Lever, 'Our Mess'. Our Mess was originally serialised monthly in the Dublin University Magazine, this is the first edition in book form. With publisher's advertisements to the front, half titles present as called for. 'With a portrait of the author and numerous illustrations on wood and steel by Phiz'. With twenty-four plates and nine vignettes by Phiz. Phiz, or Hablot Knight Browne, was a well known English artist. He also illustrated the works of Charles Dickens and Harrison Ainsworth. Appears to be lacking three plates, 'The Packet', 'Irish Sport with a Cockney' and 'La Vivandiere'. Charles Lever was an Irish novelist and raconteur. He is probably best known for his The Confessions of Harry Lorrequer. This work comprises of Our Mess volume I parts 1-13, which is the story of Hack Hinton, The Guardsman. In a half calf binding with cloth covered boards. Externally, smart with patches of rubbing to the spine and extremities, particularly to the head and tail. A few spots to the front board. Internally, firmly bound. Repair to page 77-78 in the outer margin. Some pages are cut more closely than others, not affecting text.
