The Mississippi Valley Lumberman, Vol. 27, No. 21, May 22, 1896
48 p. large quarto (14" x 10 1/2"), weekly newspaper. This looks like two papers bound as one, but it actually is one issue of this trade publication. There are about 16 pages of news surrounded by about 32 pages of advertising; the news section has the banner title as the front cover, but the news section also carries the masthead. This issue was published as the Minnesota-Wisconsin lumbering and milling business was at a peak. This is a fascinating look at the workings of the business, with advertising and news of the growers, lumbering companies, saw millers, the forest products industry (flooring, shakes, planks, lath, shingles of white and yellow pine, hemlock, cedar, maple, birch, basswood, spruce, fir), mill builders, equipment manufacturers and distributors, shippers, etc. Interestingly, there are a number of ads for bicycles, and some for Kokak cameras, as well as the more predicatable ads for lumvbermen's clothing, a lumberman's credit association, etc. The news (and the advertising) covers the entire country, not just the Upper Midwest, and touches upon finance, retailing, legislation, weather and forest problems, the metric system, freight rates, etc. Many illustrations.
