About this Item
March, 1957 issue of Modern Man: The Adult Picture Magazine featuring Bernard of Hollywood full color cover and back panel photos of mid-century pin-up model, sometime film and TV actress and ultimately tragic figure June McCall - an iconic example of Hollywood's early exploitation of beautiful women. At 17, McCall was a Vargas Girl, later the focus of over 300 cheesecake cover photos sometimes snapped by legendary photographers such as Andre de Dienes, Bernard of Hollywood, Earl Moran, Tom Kelley, et al, occasional B movie actress (notably in the SF camp classic Queen of Outer Space), frequent TV guest and chronic alcoholic, getting outrageously drunk at her first wedding and continuing to drink heavily throughout her short life, ultimately dying at the age of 55 from alcoholic liver disease in a Van Nuys, California hospital. Generally, McCall passed up few opportunities to put herself into the position of being seen. By her own admission, she said, "I want to be a great actress. That's why I'll pose in anything they want me to, as long as it gets my name in the papers." McCall was best known for her striking red hair tumbling in curls to her shoulders, her turquoise eyes, a perfect figure (36-26-36), a constitutional distaste for posing nude and her signature fish net stockings. Of special note in this issue is McCall's infamous eight-page photo-illustrated expose on mid-century Hollywood's corruption of "good" girls, those who aspired to be actresses and more without compromising their characters. McCall asks "How Far Should a Girl Go for Stardom?" She deftly navigates this topic without naming names, which, if she had, would likely have compromised her career. In addition, this issue includes a photo of a bikini-clad McCall, clearly showing a transverse scar on her belly. Presumably, the scar resulted from an abortion or cesarean early in her life. McCall's father vehemently objected to a similar photo published by Life Magazine in 1949, fearing it would derail McCall's career. 60 pp. 11" x 8 1/2". Tight, immaculate copy. Extremities crisp. Tiny date written in ink on top right corner of front panel. Internals unmarked front to back. Faint age toning. An unusually presentable copy of a collectible mid-century publication, featuring one of Hollywood's most tragic figures. Photographs of or additional information about this item are available on request. All inquiries answered promptly. Seller Inventory # 377233
