Edition: 1st Edition.
1st Printing. Signed. 500 pages. Published in 2001. Rare Umberto Eco collectible item. A pristine copy of the Folio Society First Slipcased Edition in its First Printing, signed by Umberto Eco. The author's breakthrough debut novel. One of the greatest novels of the 20th century. The first appearance of the title in this edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent printings. Although the limitation is not stated, Folio Society titles are known to be small, and are only re-issued if the demand is greater than the original first print run. This title was re-issued in a Second Printing. There is no ISBN. The Folio Society Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by the Folio Society: Oversize-volume format. Red cloth boards with gilt design and titles embossed on the cover and spine, as issued. Text by Umberto Eco. Original art by Neil Packer. Stunning endpapers. Black hard board slipcase. Printed on archival stock paper in the United Kingdom to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Re-presents, in a sumptuous and elegant production, Umberto Eco's "Il nome della rosa" in William Weaver's definitive English translation. An illuminating exploration of what has remained the author's lifelong theme as intellectual and novelist: The relation between the elusive truth and credible falsehood. In the Eco universe, the truth is arrived at only through an accidental, and sometimes lethal, discovery of an intriguing puzzle or long-suppressed secret. Its path is strewn with false leads, misleading half-truths, clever lies, sheer fabrications, and outright falsehoods that nevertheless inexplicably contain a valuable grain of truth. In "The Name of the Rose", this "grain" is the real thing, a physical, edible element, one of Eco's most brilliant literary touches. The basis of the fine and underrated film by Jean-Jacques Annaud, with Sean Connery and Christian Slater. Time flies: One looked forward to a new Umberto Eco book with reliable, nearly annual, regularity, and even if, lest one forget, the book in question needed to be translated first - with the author's complete involvement and full blessing - before it could actually be published. Those of us who were fortunate enough to see and hear him in person knew first-hand that apart from being a ground-breaking scholar, philosopher, cultural critic ("semiotician"), and literary artist/novelist, Eco was also a fastidious polylinguist whose command of the English language was better than most native speakers'. Umberto Eco died on February 19, 2016 at the age of 84, the exact same day as Harper Lee, another literary icon of the less prolific kind, who died at the age of 89. They will both be missed. An absolute "must-have" title for Umberto Eco collectors. This copy of the Folio Society First Slipcased Edition is very boldly and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Umberto Eco. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. He signed his name in full (as opposed to the more common "U. Eco"), and his signature is clean, flowing, and elegant. This title is a great book. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the Folio Society Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies of the First Edition available online command thousands of dollars even though they all have major flaws. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with full-page color plates by Neil Packer. One of the greatest writers of our time. A fine collectible copy.
