About this Item

The author, Edward Mather, wrote a superior biography of this great American writer, whose stature amng American writers is undiminished. The reader will find many fascianting and insightful anecdotes of Hawthorne, his friends and family, including of course such figures as Emerson, Thoreau, Alcott, Elizabeth Peabody, Margaret Fuller, and others "who were part of New England's Golden Age," They all have their part in Mather's story, plus those Hawthorne met in England and Italy, including Thomas Hughes, Heigh Hunt and Robert Browning. Mather also shines lihgt on that period of Hawthorne's life when he became a semi-recluse. Mather himself, although an Englishman with a baronetcy, had many associations with the US, including being a descendent from the same family tree as Cotton and Increase Mather. Altogether an absorbing and revealing biography. This copy is a true first edition, near fine, binding clean and tight, with a gift inscription to the original owner from the family minister. The DJ is in GOOD PLUS condition, still strong despite a few small chips missing from around the edges, at the top of the spine, and a loose horizontal sliver at the top. A review of Robert Cantwell's "Nathaniel Hawthorne: The American Years" from Time Magazine of October 4, 1948 is tipped in. Bookseller Inventory # 111139
