This fascinating map of Europe presents a detailed overview of the geopolitical situation on the continent near the end of the 18th century. France was experiencing a period of political instability that would ultimately lead to the Revolution in 1789, while the Spanish Empire continued its period of decline. The British were ascendant after victory in the Seven Years War, though the success of the American Revolution would soon see the loss of many of their colonies in North America. In the east, conflict between the Ottoman Empire and various European powers throughout the century would lead to near constant border changes and the eventual dissolution of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The expansion of the Russian Empire, often at the expense of the Turks, is evident and even then doesn't include recent victories in the Crimea. In addition to numerous place names crammed within the image, the map also identifies prominent geographic features such as rivers, mountain ranges, straits, and more. Iceland and the Holy Land are included as well. Published in London around 1780 by Thomas Bowen.
