Jacket protected by removable Brodart mylar cover. NEW POEMS-1960 is Witter Bynner's first collection of entirely new verse since Take Away the Darkness, which appeared in 1947. His Book of Lyrics (1955) was made up partly of new writing, but primarily of selections of earlier lyrics. Here with these poems, written impetuously over a short period and related in subject and mood, he has created a volume that forms an entity, and the poems have purposely been withheld from magazine publication so as to be, in book form, new to the public. Bynner readers may recall an early forecast of these poems in his volume The Beloved Stranger (1919). But nowhere else has he exercised such an unusual poetic faculty, drawing upon a whole set of new perceptions. He gives humor the quick dignity and stroke it seldom plays in poetry; mirth and melancholy seem to come together in the throat. As the critic Lon Tinkle said of him, "Whatever his mood or theme, Bynner makes his poems explode in the mind. He is neither a pillow nor a crutch. To like him, you have to own spiritual toughness." Not strictly a sequence, these poems all seem to contain elements of surprise, of wit and double meaning, and they are held together by a certain dream-like quality of suspense. But, as in most dreams, there are seeming irrelevancies, quick twists of meaning and substance within the context, the end-lines often appearing from nowhere in a strange contradiction of reality. It is an odd, elusive magic that Bynner wields, and readers who like these poems will find them ironic, challenging, and disturbingly profound.
