(Hardcover, 2012). 2012 1st edition. 4to (195 x 258mm). Ppx,222. Colour paintings & b/w illustrations by the Marquess of Ripon, b/w photographs, pictorial end-papers. Green boards, spine titled in gilt. Fine new copy in dust-wrapper. Signed by the author. Oliver Robinson, later the 2nd Marquis of Ripon, was famous in his day, partly for his marksmanship and slick gun-handling, but also for the sheer number of birds he shot every season. This book is partly a sporting biography but also serves as a history of one aspect of Society, with a capital S, of the latter half of the nineteenth century. Real history intrudes interestingly from time to time. Before his succession to the title, Oliver Robinson was elected MP for Ripon and before this, he had accompanied a British diplomatic delegation to the USA as an attache to his father. (Alabama Commission and Treaty of Washington, 1871). Most of the Marquis's career, and therefore this book, however, concerns shooting gamebirds. This first edition is limited to 1500 copies only.
