A very good copy of the original trade edition of Willa Cather's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. This is the third trade printing, after the 340 numbered signed copies of the specially bound limited edition. But these trade edition copies are quite rare to find with a personal inscription, and although this is the third trade printing, it is the earliest signed date that we have come across, just two months after the first trade printing in September 1922. Willa Cather. ONE OF OURS. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1922. Very good plus, in the publisher’s tan cloth with gilt and orange lettering and design on the front panel and spine. A bordered cartouche, consisting of a printed note to the reader from Alfred A. Knopf, which takes up the entire front panel of the dust jacket (less the narrow blank border) is laid in. The remainder of the jacket is not present. The front decorated end paper has a signed presentation from the author: "Inscribed for / “Auntie Potter” / Willa Cather / November 22 / 1922" We have not been able to identify the recipient but Potter does not appear to be a family name and we suspect that “Auntie Potter” was meant as an affectionate term for a close acquaintance. A likely candidate might be a ‘Mrs. Davidge’ who was a neighbor of Cather when she was living on Washington Place in Greenwich Village, and who was described by Edith Lewis, author of WILLA CATHER LIVING: A Personal Record, as “a most witty and delightful woman.” Mrs. Davidge was the daughter of Bishop Potter of the Episcopalian Church and Cather had joined the Episcopal Church in 1922, the same year that ONE OF OURS was published. We would appreciate any other suggestions our readers may have as to the identity of the dedicatee. This is the third printing of the trade edition, dated September 1922, as are the earlier two. Knopf had designated the signed limited edition as the first edition, the first trade printing as the second edition, etc. Personally inscribed trade copies of Cather’s novels are extremely scarce. This one especially so because it is her Pulitzer Prize novel. Bookseller Inventory #
