Hugh Miller s The Old Red Sandstone; Or, New Walks in an Old Field, By Hugh Miller, Illustrated with Numerous Engravings From the Fourth London Edition, Gould and Lincoln, Boston, 1854, colored fold-out frontis plate, ten plates, 263 pp, brown blind cloth, 8 x 5.25 , 8vo. In good condition. Light wear to extremities with minor fading along edges of boards and spine. G & L publisher s stamp on front and back board center. Lightly chipped end bands. Overall lightly soiled. Old hand ownership on fly leaf. Foxed end papers. Interior has minor age-related toning with scattered foxing. Fold-out plate in good working order. no rips. Colored plate remains bright. Binding tight and intact. Free of known markings. Please see photos. First American edition of this famous geological study by Hugh Miller (1802-1856). Miller was a geologist, writer, folklorist and Evangelical Christian. This was his most famous work and is still referenced by geology scholars. Miller held that the Earth was of great age, and that it had been inhabited by many species which had come into being and gone extinct, and that these species were homologous; although he believed the succession of species showed progress over time, he did not believe that later species were descended from earlier ones.
