Description:

Hardcover in dust jacket, 6 1/2" x 9 1/2", 248 pages including index. Book very good +, with no inscriptions but scattered pencil notes and underlining within text. Dust jacket poor, battered and missing pieces from top of spine and bottom of front. Rare. From the flyleaf: "Hiram Caton's examination of the Cartesian origin of modern rationalism is a significant contribution to philosophy. His task is made more imperative than ever by today's deteriorating confidence in rationalism. He urges the priority of Descartes' scientific views and endorses Descartes' title as the father of modern philosophy. Caton's comprehensive new interpretation shows the unity of Descartes' philosophy in the dualist principle of mind and body. He integrates the notions of animal automatism and optics within metaphysics and uses the optical bias of Descartes' thought for an extensive analysis of the meditations. This recapitulation of method affirms thought and extension as the coordinate first principle of philosophy. The necessity and sufficiency of this principle explains why Descartes replaced the traditional concept of soul with consciousness and why he made his metaphysics independent of theology. Stressing the interplay between historical continuity and innovation, Caton shows that the Cartesian method arises by a specific transformation of traditional methodology. He joins a small but distinguished minority of commentators who maintain that Descartes' ethical thought is consciously hostile to classical and Christian ethics. His broad, clear study poses a challenge to much of the work done in the past decades. The origin of subjectivity also includes a bibliography of Descartes literature from 1960 to 1970.". About the Author: Hiram Caton, D.Litt., is professor of politics and history at Griffith University, Brisbane, Australian. He is well qualified for his task. He holds the M.A. in Arabic and Islamic Civilization from the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago and the doctorate in Philosophy from Yale University. He is familiar with the project to unite the social and biological sciences, having contributed to that effort as a historian, political psychologist, human ethnologist, and bibliographer. As a political scientist he is at home with cultural politics that lent passion to the controversy. His philosophical training and policy studies on applications of biomedical technology have equipped him to deal with the challenging problems of knowledge evaluation raised by the clash between the two images of Samoa. Among his current publications are The politics of Progress: The Origins and Development of the Commercial Republic 1600-1835, University of Florida Press, and Trends in Biomedical regulation (editor), butterworths, in press.

Book Description New Haven & London: Yale University Press, 1973., 1973. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First Edition. xvi, 248 pp. Original cloth. Near Fine, in near fine dust jacket (price-clipped). Reviewed for Isis by Bruce S. Eastwood (Vol. 66, No. 2, June, 1975, pp. 276-278). Caton didn't publish another book for 11 years and those subsequent works reflect his shifting interests; regrettably, one viewpoint to which he eventually subscribed was that of an AIDS dissident. While that school of thought has ensnared a few Nobel Laureates (though Wally Gilbert has reportedly left their ranks, and one of the others is maverick Kary Mullis), as my fellow bookselling father and I sometimes say (in homage to an 80s TV commercial), 'I'm not buying that muffler.'.
