About this Item
Oxford Book of Classical Verse, 1250 1900. Edited by Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch (Oxford University Press, 1930) 8vo (165 x 115 mm), 1081. An exceptionally fine Grolieresque binding by Rivière & Son. Full midnight-blue crushed Morocco. Boards richly tooled in gilt with interlocking geometric and floral patterns. Spine with raised bands in six compartments, gilt-lettered direct in second and third compartment. Remaining compartments extra-gilt with roseate lozenge surrounded by floral sprays. Elaborate gilt inner dentelles. All edges gilt. Inscription on ffep from James Levine (1943-2021), music director of the Metropolitan Opera and Boston Symphony Orchestra, to his brother, the artist Tom Levine. A truly opulent and unique binding from the storied bookbinders Rivière and Son, executed ca. 1930. The decorative inspiration for the binding comes from a style of renaissance binding particularly favoured by the bibliophile Jean Grolier de Servières (1489 1565), after whom the Grolier Club in New York City is named.
